Bob Church: I am a 52 year-old Vietnam veteran. I live with my wife and family in Topeka, Kansas. We own a family business here, but our roots are in Colorado. I write poetry, short stories, and even an e-column...... unfortunately, all badly. But, I keep trying, because it's simply what I enjoy doing. I'm not sure that anyone just wakes up one morning and decides to write some poetry. I think it is the product of something deeper, something more profound which must find the light of day. My poetry crosses boundaries from the uplifting, to the questioning, to the morose. All the emotions which humans feel.... most of these poems have never been seen before except by a select few, because they are very personal. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them. Peace......

The Lesson

Swishing and swirling, never to be slowed,
flowing into canyons, never seeing roads,
not respecting boundaries, impossible to contain,
impassible when swollen by God's eternal rain.
Slashing and dashing, wearing down earthen folly,
echoing nature's canvas with hues of subtle umber,
embroidering mountainside with heliotrope and holly,
unrestrained by all attempts to sully or encumber.
Sleepy bergs with unknown names forever to be lost
when furies rage and soon engage their passions,
leaving only ruinous glory, forever slung and tossed,
sated not until the time when Mother takes her ration.
So it was, and so it is, so it shall ever be unchanging,
no need for thought or comment, much less rearranging;
we foolish mortals play our games of tag, of taker or of giver,
but we never learn the lessons taught by nature's smallest river.
